Mount Elgon National Park has the largest volcanic base in the world at around 80km in diameter. It is 4,321 meters high and can be climbed in 4 days. After trekking through forest, bamboo and moorland you reach a giant caldera, 8 kilometres wide, on the summit. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents.
Additional Excursions
On Mt Elgon, but outside the park are the impressive Sipi Falls. In fact, there are 3 waterfalls all of which are wonderful to explore. There is also plenty of mid-range accommodation.
For experienced paraglider pilots Wanale ridge offers excellent paragliding opportunities.
Mt Kaddam, just to the North of Mt Elgon can be climbed in 3 days and offers a more adventurous alternative to the well organised Mt Elgon National Park.
